FreeBSD 8.0 is Here, Among Other News
So, thanks to @c0decafe on twitter, I was tipped off to the fact that FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE is up on FTP as of yesterday, which is an exciting development. RootBSD, which hosts one of my VPSs (not this one), is looking for beta testers for 8.0 before they make it an official option, and I think I may volunteer. Couldn’t hurt, as I’m not even really doing anything “real” with my 7.2 VPS right now. However, I’m likely to pick up a copy of VMWare Fusion 3, or Parallels Desktop for my MacBook Pro and play with it in there, too. BSD doesn’t really play particularly nice with VirtualBox OSE, at least not any of the times that I’ve tried it before, and given the amount of stuff I want to experiment with for my new job, I think it’ll be worth it.
I’m going to the store later anyway, as I broke the clip off my BlackBerry belt holder thing, so I may as well investigate the software while I’m there. Other than that, not too much to report except for my next useless programming project.
I plan on releasing ACME::ODB to cPan this week some time. The ODB stands for “Old Dirty Bastard,” and it will be a Moose class with methods for computing the youngest girl you can date, the youngest scotch you should drink, and some other pointless bullshit that totally qualifies it for ACME. Incidentally, my code is getting more Perl-like and less C like. I went through and re-did all of the exercises in Learning Perl again last week (which tipped me off to the Flintstones thing) and actually took a look at the solutions this time. Getting a working program and getting a working program that looks like Perl aren’t quite the same thing, and I throw around way too many intermediate arrays and stuff.
Now I actually get array slices and stuff, which is nice. I also picked up a copy of Intermediate Perl and Mastering Perl to help me get Perlish syntax down so that I can get out of C land. It turns out that map {} and grep {} are perhaps the greatest things ever, especially in conjunction with each other.
I ate BBQ yesterday at Smokey Pig in Ashland, and I’m not sorry about it, either. The vegetarian thing is pretty much dead at this point. I was bad at it, anyway, and Smokey Pig kicks ass. You should all go there. NOW.
